obsession of The Mind #valentinesday2022

[1] The Book of the Ones
Homage to the Blessed One, the Arahant,
the Perfectly Enlightened One
I. Obsession of the Mind
1 (1)
Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling
at Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s Park. There the
Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: “Bhikkhus!”
“Venerable sir!” those bhikkhus replied. The Blessed One
said this:
“Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other form that so obsesses
the mind17 of a man as the form of a woman. The form of a
woman obsesses the mind of a man.”
2 (2)
“Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other sound that so obsesses
the mind of a man as the sound of a woman. The sound of a
woman obsesses the mind of a man.”
3 (3)
“Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other odor that so obsesses the
mind of a man as the odor of a woman. The odor of a woman
obsesses the mind of a man.”18 [2]
4 (4)
“Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other taste that so obsesses the
mind of a man as the taste of a woman. The taste of a woman
obsesses the mind of a man.”19
90 The Book of the Ones I 3
5 (5)
“Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other touch that so obsesses
the mind of a man as the touch of a woman. The touch of a
woman obsesses the mind of a man.”20
6 (6)21
“Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other form that so obsesses
the mind of a woman as the form of a man. The form of a man
obsesses the mind of a woman.”
7 (7)
“Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other sound that so obsesses
the mind of a woman as the sound of a man. The sound of a
man obsesses the mind of a woman.”
8 (😎
“Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other odor that so obsesses
the mind of a woman as the odor of a man. The odor of a man
obsesses the mind of a woman.”
9 (9)
“Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other taste that so obsesses
the mind of a woman as the taste of a man. The taste of a man
obsesses the mind of a woman.”
10 (10)
“Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other touch that so obsesses
the mind of a woman as the touch of a man. The touch of a man
obsesses the mind of a woman.” [3]
II. Abandoning the Hindrances22
11 (1)
“Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other thing on account of
which unarisen sensual desire arises and arisen sensual desire
increases and expands so much as the mark of the attractive.
23 For one who attends carelessly to the mark of the attractive,
unarisen sensual desire arises and arisen sensual desire
increases and expands

12 (2) “Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other thing on account of which unarisen ill will arises and arisen ill will increases and expands so much as the mark of the repulsive.24 For one who attends carelessly to the mark of the repulsive, unarisen ill will arises and arisen ill will increases and expands.” 13 (3) “Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other thing on account of which unarisen dullness and drowsiness arise and arisen dullness and drowsiness increase and expand so much as discontent, lethargy, lazy stretching, drowsiness after meals, and sluggishness of mind.25 For one with a sluggish mind, unarisen dullness and drowsiness arise and arisen dullness and drowsiness increase and expand.” 14 (4) “Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other thing on account of which unarisen restlessness and remorse arise and arisen restlessness and remorse increase and expand so much as an unsettled mind.26 For one with an unsettled mind, unarisen restlessness and remorse arise and arisen restlessness and remorse increase and expand.” [4] 15 (5) “Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other thing on account of which unarisen doubt arises and arisen doubt increases and expands so much as careless attention.27 For one who attends carelessly, unarisen doubt arises and arisen doubt increases and expands.” 16 (6)28 “Bhikkhus, I do not see even one other thing on account of which unarisen sensual desire does not arise and arisen sensual desire is abandoned so much as the mark of the unattractive.29 For one who attends carefully to the mark of the unattractive, unarisen sensual desire does not arise and arisen sensual desire is abandoned.”30

FIVE IMPURITIES

In modern times government is skilled producing nuclear weapons for waging war and harming each other but government lacks skill to create peace and happiness... world at large is busily laying foundations for conflict and suffering... ~~ Ogyen Drodul Yeshi Dorjee

five impurities [五濁] ( go-joku): Also, five defilements. Impurity of the age, of desire, of living beings, of thought (or view), and of life span. The “Expedient Means” (second) chapter of the Lotus Sutra says, “The Buddhas appear in evil worlds of five impurities. . . . In this evil world of the five impurities those who merely delight in and are attached to the desires, living beings such as this in the end will never seek the Buddha way.” (1) Impurity of the age includes repeated disruptions of the social or natural environment. (2) Impurity of desire is the tendency to be ruled by the five delusive inclinations, i.e., greed, anger, foolishness, arrogance, and doubt. (3) Impurity of living beings is the physical and spiritual decline of human beings. (4) Impurity of thought, or impurity of view, is the prevalence of wrong views such as the five false views. (5) Impurity of life span is the shortening of the life spans of living beings. According to The Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra, the most fundamental of these five are the impurities of thought and desire, which result in the impurity of living beings and the impurity of life span. These in turn give rise to the impurity of the age.

Song to Je Rinpoche ~~~བསྐལ་བཟང་རྒྱ་མཚོ་HH Seventh Dalai Lama Kelzang Gyatso (1708–1757)

Song to Je Rinpoche ~~~བསྐལ་བཟང་རྒྱ་མཚོ་
HH Seventh Dalai Lama Kelzang Gyatso (1708–1757)
Ah Je Rinpoche, in nature wisdom, compassion and power,
Whose legacy is not a stack of dry words, Whose successors, having won all realizations, Hold the transforming powers which bestow insight:
AH-HO-YE, what a legacy, what a legacy.

Ah Je Rinpoche, embodiment of Buddha Vajradhara, Not an exponent of shallow or false theories; Guru who is a supreme mahasiddha Outshining all other masters:

AH-HO-YE, what a Guru, what a Guru.

The oral teachings of the Ganden patriarchs Contain not a fraction but all of Buddha's methods. Core instructions on all theories and practices, They take the essence of every sutra and tantra in hand: AH-HO-YE, what core instructions,

what core instructions.

Your space-like yogas, free from philosophical extremes, Reveal not something invented by mind, But are the pinnacle of views on the way things are, A way divorced from the dusts of

eternalism and nihilism:

AH-HO-YE, what a pinnacle, what a pinnacle.

Your Mahamudra lineage, blissful and beyond intellect, Cannot be reached by mere samadhi, but Only by the meditation on bliss and radiance That reveals the ultimate nature of one's own mind: AH-HO-YE, what a meditation, what a meditation.

Your methods, hard and in harmony with the Way, Are not a vain pretense aimed at impressing others; But, keeping in mind what brings progress and what stagnation,

They aim solely at producing eternal bliss in trainees: AH-HO-YE, what an aim, what aim.

And I, a vajra who opens with pleasure, Sing not babble devoid of purpose; Some who see this will know joy, A delight both to themselves and to me: AH-HO-YE, what a joy, what a joy.

Compassion itself is noble.

HH Ogyen Trinley Dorje ཨོ་རྒྱན་འཕྲིན་ལས་རྡོ་རྗེ།

HH Trinley Thaye Dorje ཕྲིན་ལས་མཐའ་ཡས་རྡོ་རྗེ་,

“It may be difficult to tell the mind to focus on something meritorious or something good, or to practice generosity or apply patience – it is not always easy. There can be many disturbances. But when meditation is applied often and regularly, then both the body and the mind become so flexible, so able, that whatever you try to concentrate on, you will be able to concentrate on – and whatever you try to apply, you will be able to apply without any difficulty.”

• Judaism: "What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellowman. This is the entire Law; all the rest is commentary Hillel, in the Talmud for the Sabbath 31a)

• Zoroastrianism: "That nature alone is good which refrains from doing to another whatsoever is not good for itself Dadisten-1 dinik 94:5

Buddhism: "Since others too care for their own selves, those who care for themselves should not hurt others" (Udanavarga 5:20

• Jainism: "A man should wander about treating all creatures as he himself would be treated" (Sutrakritanga 1.11:33)

Daoism: Regard your neighbor's gain as your gain, and your neighbor's loss as your own loss" (Tai-shang Kan-ying Pien

• Confucianism: "Do not do to others what you would not like your self. Then there will be no resentment against you, either in the family or in the state" (Analects 12:2)

The Buddha named the world we are born into Saha, which means ‘indiscernible,’ that which cannot be seen clearly. If we do an evil action, its effect does not appear immediately. When we do something good that result is not evident to anybody. If the result of a negative action would
ripen the moment after enacting it, nobody would commit evil. Likewise, people would not hold back from positive deeds because the effect would be instantaneous. However, the results of actions do not ripen immediately; they are not instantly discernible, but only ripen slowly. Due to not realizing the positive and negative results of actions and not understanding impermanence, we are completely oblivious to the consequences of our actions. We don’t see what is happening, we don’t see the result of our actions, we don’t see how much or how little merit we have, so we walk around like stupid cows. ~~ Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche

Guruji Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

December 2, 1999 Pandalam, Kerala, India

230. THINK FRESH

To think fresh you need to be free of all impressions. Let go of all impressions right this moment and be hollow and empty. When you hear a word, the sound conveys the meaning instantaneously. Similarly, the knowledge that you are sitting, standing or talking needs neither confirmation nor proof.

Just an intention to be free makes you free right away. Realisation that freedom is your very nature brings enormous "Shakti" (energy).

Forget about this knowledge sheet and be fresh! (Laughter)

October 14, 1998 Montreal Ashram, Canada

175. THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF UNDERSTANDING

There are three kinds of understanding: intellectual understanding, experiential understanding and existential realisation.

Intellectual understanding says "yes," it agrees. Experiential understanding feels, is obvious. Existential realisation is irrefutable. It becomes your very nature.

All you hear will simply remain a jumble of words if there is no experiential understanding, which is more on the feeling level. You can know intellectually that you are hollow and empty, but sitting and feeling that you are hollow and empty is totally different.

When one gets an experience, one wants to understand more about it and becomes a seeker. If you have only intellectual understanding, you will think you know it all. Most theologians are in this category.

Existential realisation contains within it both experiential and intellectual understanding. But it is beyond both of these.

Question: How do we get there?

Sri Sri: There is no way. When the fruit becomes ripe, it falls.

Question: What is doubt? Sri Sri: t is one part of the mind challenging the other part of the mind.

MADNESS ~~~ OSHO

MADNESS
A man who has no understanding is continuously a victim of so many thoughts, because he has no one insight to give him a center. He has a crowd of thoughts, unrelated to each other, even diametrically opposite to each other, contradicting each other, with deep antagonism towards each other. He has a crowd – not even a group, not even a society, but a mob of thoughts buzzing inside the mind. So if you go on with your thinking too far, one day you will become mad. Too much thought can create insanity.

In primitive societies madness is rare. The more civilized a society is, the more people go insane. Even in civilized societies, more people go insane who work with their intellects. This is unfortunate but this is a fact: that more psychoanalysts go mad than in any other profession. Why? – too much thinking. It is very difficult to manage so many contradictory thoughts together. In managing them, your whole being becomes unmanaged, becomes a chaos.

No Mind: The Flowers of Eternity ~~~ OSHO

27 December 1988 pm in Gautam the Buddha Auditorium

BELOVED BUDDHA,

ON ONE OCCASION WHEN A MONK ASKED KYOZAN THE MEANING OF BODHIDHARMA

COMING FROM THE WEST, KYOZAN DREW A CIRCLE IN THE AIR AND PUT THE CHARACTER

FOR BUDDHA INSIDE IT. THIS LEFT THE MONK WITHOUT WORDS.

AT ANOTHER TIME, KYOZAN WAS LIVING IN SEKITEI TEMPLE IN KOSHU. A MONK CAME UP

TO HIM AND SAID, ”MASTER, DO YOU KNOW CHINESE CHARACTERS?”

”AS FAR AS BEFITS MY POSITION,” RESPONDED KYOZAN.

THE MONK THEN CIRCLED KYOZAN ONCE IN THE ANTI-CLOCKWISE DIRECTION AND

ASKED HIM, ”WHAT CHARACTER IS THIS?”

KYOZAN DREW THE CHARACTER FOR THE NUMBER TEN. THEN THE MONK WALKED

AROUND HIM IN A CLOCKWISE DIRECTION AND ASKED WHAT CHARACTER THAT WAS.

KYOZAN CHANGED THE FIGURE TEN (WHICH LOOKS LIKE A PLUS SIGN) INTO A SWASTIKA.

THE MONK THEN DREW A CIRCLE AND PRETENDED TO HOLD IT IN BOTH HIS HANDS

AND ASKED KYOZAN, ”WHAT CHARACTER IS THIS?” AT WHICH KYOZAN DREW A CIRCLE

AROUND THE SWASTIKA.

THE MONK THEN PRETENDED TO BE RUCIKA, THE LAST OF THE ONE THOUSAND

BUDDHAS OF THE PRESENT KALPA, AT WHICH KYOZAN COMMENTED, ”THAT IS RIGHT!

THAT IS WHAT ALL THE BUDDHAS HAVE KEPT – YOU ALSO, I ALSO. TAKE CARE OF IT!”

OSHO

But don't be impatient. Existence needs immense patience. The ultimate mysteries are opened only to those who have immense patience.

I am reminded...

In old Tibet it was customary, respectful, that every family should contribute to the great experiment of expanding consciousness. So the first child of each family was given to the monasteries to be trained in meditation. Perhaps no country has done such a vast experiment in consciousness.

The destruction of Tibet at the hands of communist China is one of the greatest calamities that could have happened to humanity. It is not only a question of a small country, it is a question of a great experiment that was going on for centuries in Tibet.

OSHO

The moment you desire for happiness, you have moved away from the present, you have moved away from the existential, you have already moved into the future - which is nowhere, which has not come yet. You have moved in a dream.

Now, dreams can never be fulfilling. Your desire for happiness is a dream. The dream is unreal. Through the unreal, nobody has ever been able to reach to the real. You have taken a wrong train.

The desire for happiness simply shows that you are not happy right at this moment. The desire for happiness simply shows that you are a miserable being.

Happiness is WHERE you are; wherever you are, happiness is there. It surrounds you. It is a natural phenomenon. It is just like air, just like sky. Happiness is not to be sought: it is the very stuff the universe is made of. Joy is the very stuff the universe is made of. But you have to look direct, you have to look in the immediate. If you look sideways then you miss.

You miss because of you. You miss because you have a wrong approach.

OSHO

I want inquirers. I am not here creating obedient followers. I want rebellious seekers, not people who are incapable of saying, “No!” — because to me unless you are able to say no, your yes is meaningless. Unless you can doubt, you cannot find authentic trust. It is only through doubt, and the dark night of doubt, that you reach to a state of finding something which is indubitable. Then trust arises.

Language is created for day-to-day use, language is created for the mundane world. And as far as it goes, it is good. It is perfectly adequate for the marketplace, but as you start moving into deeper waters it becomes more and more inadequate–not only inadequate, it starts becoming utterly wrong.

IMMEDIATE AND ULTIMATE

The greatest obsession that humanity suffers from is of “that which should be.” It is a kind of madness. The really healthy person has no concern with that which should be. His whole concern is the immediate, that which is. And you will be surprised: If you enter into the immediate, you will find the ultimate in it. If you move into that which is close by, you will find all the distant stars in it. If you move in the present moment, the whole eternity is in your hands.

What Happiness!

Shosha wrote:

To wake, alive, In this world. What happiness! Winter rain.

Just suddenly in winter, when it is not expected, comes a rain cloud, and showers create so many rainbows.

Shosha is saying, "To wake, alive, In this world, where everything is mortal - what happiness! Winter rain." Every morning when you wake up, remember it.

OSHO

I have never been expecting anything – so there is no question of surprise; everything is a surprise. And there is no question of disappointment; everything is an appointment. If it happens, good; if it does not happen, even better!

OSHO

The linguistic function of the mind is not the all and end all. You are behind it and existence is beyond it. Consciousness is behind the linguistic mechanism and existence is beyond the linguistic mechanism. And when consciousness and existence are in communion, that state I call meditation – consciousness and existence in communion.
