Freedom in Bondage

In prison camp, there were many rules that had to be obeyed very conscientiously. If religious followers broke one of these rules, they were punished much more severely than others. They kept a close eye on our actions and would not allow us to meet or talk to one another or exchange any news. Normally I couldn’t speak with anyone, but every now and then during a major gathering I would recognize someone in the crowd. When I was able to get teachings from anyone, it had to be shared in secret, sometimes even while visiting the toilet. Just the same, thanks to a monk from my monastery, who had already been in this prison for several years and had a good knowledge of the situation, I gradually learned about the presence of other lamas. I started asking him who was there and over time he was able to introduce me to about a dozen lamas. He told me their names, what lineage they were from, and whether they were of good or bad character. “So-and-so is a really noble character.that person is trouble, stay clear of him, don’t even talk to him.” Gradually, over those fifteen years in that prison, I got to meet some of these lamas and receive a few Dharma teachings along the way.

Tarapith

Tarapith is a Hindu pilgrimage town in Birbhum district, West Bengal, famous for its Tantric goddess Tara temple and adjacent cremation ground (Maha Sasan), which is considered one of the 51 Shakti Pithas. It is a major center for Tantric spiritual practices and rituals, with the temple dedicated to Goddess Tara, who is believed to be the divine manifestation of the third eye of Sati.

Bengali Baba guru of swami rama
Swami Rama regarded the Bengali Baba as his first and primary guru, who raised him from early childhood in the Himalayas and taught him the disciplines of yoga and philosophy. The Bengali Baba was a great Himalayan sage and a master of "immortal wisdom," who shaped Swami Rama's spiritual path before he pursued higher education and later founded the Himalayan Institute.

Maha Guru padmasabhava

Then there is mantra recitation called recitation with cessation. The mental recitation is joined to the breath-ing so that it is not just a mental recitation. We recite one part of the mantra while inhaling, one part while holding the breath, and one part while exhaling. This does not involve actual sound. For example, with the Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) mantra, on the in-breath we recite OM AH HUNG and with the held breath we recite BENDZA GURU PEMA and with the out-breath SIDDHI HUNG. The reason this is called recitation with cessation is that this method stops all thoughts.
