If you are concerned about the level of blessings that you receive, examine the level of your faith and devotion.

If there is no inherent existence, what use is compassion?
When we speak of a lack of inherent existence, we must understand it as a universal characteristic of all phenomena. If you focus on just that and realize the non-inherent existence of all phenomena but do not have any other aspect to your practice, this will block your progress. You come up against a wall, and can’t progress farther. If you really perfect this, if you really see the ultimate nature of things in their lack of inherent existence, then you are no longer bound to anything in samsara, and you attain nirvana. But that functions as a sort of stopping point, a blank wall. You can’t go any farther; you can’t achieve the benefits of living beings. You can’t even achieve your own ultimate benefit. You’re stuck! You have to go back and develop compassion in order to achieve Buddhahood because compassion cuts the other extreme view, clinging to the concept of non-inherent existence, or nihilism. Wisdom and compassion are developed
separately and joined together in the practice so as to obtain Buddhahood. It happens only through joining these together. So it’s important not to emphasize the absence of inherent existence too much. One has to always develop compassion and join those two together. Then there is no problem in attaining Buddhahood.

The Benefits of Reciting the Six-Syllable Mantra
Om Mani padme hum
by Drubwang Konchok Norbu Rinpoche
Everyone has assembled here in order to recite the six-syllable mantra. It is indeed the best way to make our human lives meaningful. In this world, the six-syllable mantra is the most suitable practice for ordinary people like ourselves. Lord Buddha has taught many different kinds of Dharma teachings, and if all those teachings are summarised in a nutshell, it is the six-syllable mantra. There can be no Dharma practice more profound than this mantra. Reciting the six-syllable mantra is extremely beneficial and necessary at this point of time. We have taken countless births in samsara, and every time we are born in samsara, we committed lots of negative karma and we have had many transgressions of precepts and vows. All these downfalls, transgressions and defilements can be purified through the recitation of this mantra.
Not only do we have this precious human life, we also possess the Buddha-nature, which is the potentiality or the seed for attaining complete enlightenment. Generally speaking, all sentient beings are Buddhas. The only difference between a Buddha and a sentient being is that the Buddha is free from all defilements while the sentient being is not. The moment the defilements are removed from the Buddha-nature of a sentient being, the sentient being becomes a Buddha. It is important to know that all these defilements which have covered our mind are temporary. They can be removed and eliminated through skillful methods such as by reciting the six-syllable mantra. All these defilements that have covered our Buddha-nature have been accumulated from countless lives in samsara. And all these defilements fall into two categories – the defilement of afflictive emotions and the defilement that obstructs one from realising the absolute reality. Both these defilements can be purified and eliminated from its roots through the recitation of the six-syllable mantra.

The Eighth Garchen Rinpoche མགར་ཆེན་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་
Gar Quote No. 32 A person who has seen the nature of mind as it is and has gained stability in abiding in it, as they watch their mind they see the empty essence like space, unidentifiable. The nature of mind cannot be described; it is like space. Milarepa said, "When there is no difference between space and mind, that is the perfected dharmakaya." The empty space-like essence is the quality of dharmakaya. Then, there is a vivid clear awareness that knows its empty space-like essence. The nature of clarity is emptiness; the nature of emptiness is clarity. They are not separate, they are non-distinct, they are the union of clarity and emptiness. The qualities of the samboghakaya arise from the nature, which is clear awareness. From the union of clarity and emptiness shines the natural radiance of compassion pervading all the reaches of space. It pervades wherever emptiness pervades. We thus say that the buddhas' compassion pervades everywhere. The all-pervasive compassion is the nirmanakaya.

Question: Many Tibetans quote a sutra passage that says if one does not hear, see, or suspect that meat has been obtained especially for you, then it is acceptable to eat. How do you respond to this?
Rinpoche: If the animal being killed is unseen, then it is something like stealing something without being caught. That would also be deemed acceptable if you used this rationale. You could say something dirty without being heard — as if you need evidence to judge whether it is a sin or not. What they say is not right. Killing, stealing, and other negative actions can never be gotten away with. Even if other people don’t see you do them, the deities, buddhas, and bodhisattvas see you doing these things. There is a Tibetan saying that even if one does not get caught committing a sin, that the gods catch you every time. It is impossible to do anything without being seen — you’re always being watched by the deities. They see and understand what you did — they know that you helped to kill an animal by buying meat. This is my answer.

Book Compassionate Action
Edited, Introduced, and Annotated by Zach Larson Snow Lion Publications Ithaca, New York Boulder, Colorado
To obtain real peace and happiness in this world one has simply to follow the path of ahimsa - nonviolence - which naturally is common to all the religions of the world. If we do not like to experience any pain or suffering of any kind, how can we expect any other creature - whether big or small - to feel otherwise?
There is no better prayer or worship we can offer to Lord Buddha than being thoughtful, kind, compassionate and abstaining from taking the life of any fellow human being, animal, bird, fish or insect.

Supplication to the guru ~ Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche
Praying to the guru is not necessarily a matter of chanting mantras or reading a supplication composed by others. The real prayer, on the relative level, is just thinking of the guru — his form, his name, his activities, his color, his shape, even his movement.
If you forget to pray to the guru for a long time, he will not complain that you haven’t been offering enough prayers. But the moment you remember the guru, he is there; his compassion is there, and his blessing is there. The notion of the guru being there comes from remembering the guru. Remembering is the presence of the guru.
We can supplicate to the guru for mundane things like longevity, prosperity, good health, materializing Rwandan hunks. The main aim is to have compassion, bodhichitta, renunciation mind, and to experience the enthusiasm and joy of supplication itself so that we will have devotion. We supplicate to understand the meaning of nonduality, beginning with actualizing the nonduality of guru and student.

Awareness itself, your true nature.

The sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje རང་འབྱུང་རིག་པའི་རྡོ་རྗེ་,
The sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje རང་འབྱུང་རིག་པའི་རྡོ་རྗེ་,
🌷 16th Karmapa during the passing away of 3rd King of Bhutan 🌷
🌸 The Karmapas being realized being with pure karma, their lives were filled with clairvoyance, miracles and mystery everynow and then. These were seen and experienced by many of their disciples on various occassions. 🌸
⚘ Here is a story of one such experience recounted by Eric Pema Kunsang about H.H.16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje during the passing away of the 3rd king of Bhutan: ⚘
🌸 One night, the Karmapa called out for his personal attendant, who at that time was Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche. The Karmapa asked him to arrange a shrine and bring a certain text as they needed to do a name-burning ceremony. So Chokyi Nyima woke up the monks, and they set up a small shrine at the Karmapa’s bedside with the tormas etc. 🌸
⚘As soon as everything was ready, Karmapa opened the text and started chanting while he performed the name-burning. Afterward, His Holiness sat quietly gazing into midair, as if he could see something there in space. Then he shouted the sacred syllable several times and snapped his fingers.⚘
🌸 Eventually, he finished chanting the text, wrapped it back up and motioned for the monks to take the shrine away. There was no explanation as to what had just happened. Chokyi Nyima was used to this sort of thing, and so he quitely did what was required of him to do and went back to bed. 🌸
⚘ Several hours later a monk came running into the quarters shouting, “Yishin Norbu! (Wish-Fulfilling Jewel!) The King of Bhutan has just passed away, and we have received a call from the Bhutanese Court requesting you to perform the name-burning ceremony for him. They said that you are the one in whom they have the most faith and asked that you do it immediately.” The Karmapa turned calmly toward the panting monk and said, “Tell them I already did it.” ⚘
🌸 Later, the Karmapa told Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, “Whomever I have had a link with in this life, either good or bad, they always come before me when they are passing through the bardo. Even though they no longer have a physical body, I always recognize who they are. They also know who I am since the spirit in the intermediate state is clairvoyant. If they have a pure karmic connection they will remain in my presence until I liberate them. If not, they will fly off and never come back for they have taken on some new form in a new life.” 🌸
🙏 KARMAPA KHENNO! 🙏
🙏 May all beings be blessed with the intelligence to recognize you during their time in the intermediate state after their death. May your blessing be with all. 🙏

Thé third sort of forbearance is to have confidence in the excellent qualities of the Three Jewels. It comes about through taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha and through practicing Dharma. We should constantly remember to seek our inspiration in the Three Jewels and to apply ourselves to comprehending the absolute and relative aspects of truth. In the relative world, karma, cause and effect, exist and wè should do good and avoid bad action. In the absolute truth there is neither good nor bad and all is seen as illusion. To strive hard to understand these two simultaneous levels of truth, hard for most people to grasp, especially to understand truth.

It is important to recognize self-attachment as soon as it arises. Try it out at the dinner table when you go home today. When all the dishes are set out, don’t fall into the habit of only being concerned with what you want to eat. The more you are concerned with others, the happier you will be. When we are concerned about others and solicitous about their needs, they respond in kind, and this makes us happy; it’s just that simple. You can see that it’s the same with your dog; if you treat him well, he becomes your best friend.

Even if death were to fall upon you today like lightning, you must be ready to die without sadness and regret, without any residue of clinging for what is left behind. Remaining in the recognition of the absolute view, you should leave this life like an eagle soaring up into the blue sky.

The first aspect of meditation is the development of an inner awareness that acquaints one with the mind as it really is, beneath its superficial layer of obscuration. When there is no practice of meditation it is impossible to practice generosity, skilful conduct, forbearance and diligence fully - they cannot become ‘perfections’ because their very essence, this inner awareness is lacking. In order to get to know our mind as it is, we first practice samatta (Tib.shi-nay) meditation. This makes the mind more tranquil and lets it rest in its own qualities, free from the disturbing presence of recent accumulations. Samatta is developed by cultivating an awareness, a mindfulness of everything that arises. In the meditation session we relax the body, speech and mind and rest naturally and simply in the present state which is by nature free from all the obstacle-delusions of desire, anger, ignorance, jealousy and pride.

No matter how much hardship we face for the sake of worldly activities, it will only become the cause for continuous rebirth in this cyclic world. There will be no time for attaining liberation with these mundane activities. Yet we are still attached to these worldly activities due to our own karmic obscuration. So, try to practice diligently with constancy while you are engaged in this one month retreat, as you will acquire the complete set of knowledge on the different ways of practicing the Dharma.

Venerable Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso Rinpoche
When contemplating the faults of samsara, we need to understand that in samsara, as we explained, there is some enjoyment, some peace, which distracts our minds and keeps us from having any accumulation of merit or purification. It is just like in Christianity: In the beginning, God said there is a very nice apple tree, but you should not get distracted and eat of it. If you do, then you will get spoiled. By not listening to that and eating the apple, all evil and bad things happened. Just like that, in this world there are certain things that really feel attractive, but when you look at the object of attraction and really examine it deeply, there is nothing attractive. It is all just like a magician's creation which looks very real, but when you approach it, then you see that it is artificial with no essence. That is why one has the thoughts of the precious human birth, that death is uncertain, that the law of karma is going to direct you, and that the law of karma is created by yourself. There is no external law of karma ordering you to do all these kinds of things. Each and every experience of good and bad, suffering and happiness, that you experience each and every moment is created by yourself. That is known as the ripening of karma.
