Supplication to the guru ~ Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche

Praying to the guru is not necessarily a matter of chanting mantras or reading a supplication composed by others. The real prayer, on the relative level, is just thinking of the guru — his form, his name, his activities, his color, his shape, even his movement.

If you forget to pray to the guru for a long time, he will not complain that you haven’t been offering enough prayers. But the moment you remember the guru, he is there; his compassion is there, and his blessing is there. The notion of the guru being there comes from remembering the guru. Remembering is the presence of the guru.

We can supplicate to the guru for mundane things like longevity, prosperity, good health, materializing Rwandan hunks. The main aim is to have compassion, bodhichitta, renunciation mind, and to experience the enthusiasm and joy of supplication itself so that we will have devotion. We supplicate to understand the meaning of nonduality, beginning with actualizing the nonduality of guru and student.

It helps to recite supplication prayers in a loud voice with all kinds of tunes, so as to penetrate your stubborn shell of impure perception.

Although hundreds or thousands of explanations are given,
There is only one thing to be understood -
Know the one thing that liberates everything -
Awareness itself, your true nature.

The sixteenth Gyalwa Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje རང་འབྱུང་རིག་པའི་རྡོ་རྗེ་,

🌷 16th Karmapa during the passing away of 3rd King of Bhutan 🌷

🌸 The Karmapas being realized being with pure karma, their lives were filled with clairvoyance, miracles and mystery everynow and then. These were seen and experienced by many of their disciples on various occassions. 🌸

⚘ Here is a story of one such experience recounted by Eric Pema Kunsang about H.H.16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje during the passing away of the 3rd king of Bhutan: ⚘

🌸 One night, the Karmapa called out for his personal attendant, who at that time was Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche. The Karmapa asked him to arrange a shrine and bring a certain text as they needed to do a name-burning ceremony. So Chokyi Nyima woke up the monks, and they set up a small shrine at the Karmapa’s bedside with the tormas etc. 🌸

⚘As soon as everything was ready, Karmapa opened the text and started chanting while he performed the name-burning. Afterward, His Holiness sat quietly gazing into midair, as if he could see something there in space. Then he shouted the sacred syllable several times and snapped his fingers.⚘

🌸 Eventually, he finished chanting the text, wrapped it back up and motioned for the monks to take the shrine away. There was no explanation as to what had just happened. Chokyi Nyima was used to this sort of thing, and so he quitely did what was required of him to do and went back to bed. 🌸

⚘ Several hours later a monk came running into the quarters shouting, “Yishin Norbu! (Wish-Fulfilling Jewel!) The King of Bhutan has just passed away, and we have received a call from the Bhutanese Court requesting you to perform the name-burning ceremony for him. They said that you are the one in whom they have the most faith and asked that you do it immediately.” The Karmapa turned calmly toward the panting monk and said, “Tell them I already did it.” ⚘

🌸 Later, the Karmapa told Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, “Whomever I have had a link with in this life, either good or bad, they always come before me when they are passing through the bardo. Even though they no longer have a physical body, I always recognize who they are. They also know who I am since the spirit in the intermediate state is clairvoyant. If they have a pure karmic connection they will remain in my presence until I liberate them. If not, they will fly off and never come back for they have taken on some new form in a new life.” 🌸

🙏 KARMAPA KHENNO! 🙏

🙏 May all beings be blessed with the intelligence to recognize you during their time in the intermediate state after their death. May your blessing be with all. 🙏

Thé third sort of forbearance is to have confidence in the excellent qualities of the Three Jewels. It comes about through taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha and through practicing Dharma. We should constantly remember to seek our inspiration in the Three Jewels and to apply ourselves to comprehending the absolute and relative aspects of truth. In the relative world, karma, cause and effect, exist and wè should do good and avoid bad action. In the absolute truth there is neither good nor bad and all is seen as illusion. To strive hard to understand these two simultaneous levels of truth, hard for most people to grasp, especially to understand truth.

It is important to recognize self-attachment as soon as it arises. Try it out at the dinner table when you go home today. When all the dishes are set out, don’t fall into the habit of only being concerned with what you want to eat. The more you are concerned with others, the happier you will be. When we are concerned about others and solicitous about their needs, they respond in kind, and this makes us happy; it’s just that simple. You can see that it’s the same with your dog; if you treat him well, he becomes your best friend.

Even if death were to fall upon you today like lightning, you must be ready to die without sadness and regret, without any residue of clinging for what is left behind. Remaining in the recognition of the absolute view, you should leave this life like an eagle soaring up into the blue sky.

The first aspect of meditation is the development of an inner awareness that acquaints one with the mind as it really is, beneath its superficial layer of obscuration. When there is no practice of meditation it is impossible to practice generosity, skilful conduct, forbearance and diligence fully - they cannot become ‘perfections’ because their very essence, this inner awareness is lacking. In order to get to know our mind as it is, we first practice samatta (Tib.shi-nay) meditation. This makes the mind more tranquil and lets it rest in its own qualities, free from the disturbing presence of recent accumulations. Samatta is developed by cultivating an awareness, a mindfulness of everything that arises. In the meditation session we relax the body, speech and mind and rest naturally and simply in the present state which is by nature free from all the obstacle-delusions of desire, anger, ignorance, jealousy and pride.

No matter how much hardship we face for the sake of worldly activities, it will only become the cause for continuous rebirth in this cyclic world. There will be no time for attaining liberation with these mundane activities. Yet we are still attached to these worldly activities due to our own karmic obscuration. So, try to practice diligently with constancy while you are engaged in this one month retreat, as you will acquire the complete set of knowledge on the different ways of practicing the Dharma.

Venerable Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso Rinpoche

When contemplating the faults of samsara, we need to understand that in samsara, as we explained, there is some enjoyment, some peace, which distracts our minds and keeps us from having any accumulation of merit or purification. It is just like in Christianity: In the beginning, God said there is a very nice apple tree, but you should not get distracted and eat of it. If you do, then you will get spoiled. By not listening to that and eating the apple, all evil and bad things happened. Just like that, in this world there are certain things that really feel attractive, but when you look at the object of attraction and really examine it deeply, there is nothing attractive. It is all just like a magician's creation which looks very real, but when you approach it, then you see that it is artificial with no essence. That is why one has the thoughts of the precious human birth, that death is uncertain, that the law of karma is going to direct you, and that the law of karma is created by yourself. There is no external law of karma ordering you to do all these kinds of things. Each and every experience of good and bad, suffering and happiness, that you experience each and every moment is created by yourself. That is known as the ripening of karma.

Died: 4 April 1987, Halifax, Canada

When you practice meditation, you should sit without a plan. It should be meaningful without it being a big deal. You simply sit on the fl oor or in your chair. If you question wheth er you are sitting properly or not, then you might begin to perch. Instead, just sit, very simply and directly. If you are wait ing for something to happen, that is a problem of future orien tation. If you are oriented to the present, you just do it. It’s a very blunt approach to life, blunt and realistic. There’s no ro mance involved, except for the joy of the present.

HH PADMA NORBU RINPOCHE

Within our mind-stream, there is every kind of mental afflictions or defilements which are known as five poisons. These are the main causes by which we experience all kinds of suffering and problems in Samsara. That's why our central objective as a practitioner is about how we can get rid of this afflicted mind, how we can abandon it and how we can eliminate these poisons.

When you’re among peaceful, generous, happy people, you’re inclined to feel happy and peaceful yourself. When you’re among angry, aggressive people, you tend to become like them. The human mind is like a mirror. A mirror does not discriminate but simply reflects whatever’s before it, no matter whether it’s horrible or wonderful.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche

Day 190

Only by understanding karma and seeing why we are suffering can we stop this continual round of problem after problem.

-Lama Zopa Rinpoche

There are many factors that determine the strength of the karma we create and the heaviness of its result. Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo lists six: the nature of the action; the intention; the deed; the base; the frequency of the act; and the act not being purified.

If all other factors are equal, then the ten nonvirtues have different degrees of heaviness. Pabongka Rinpoche says that the seven nonvirtues of body and speech are listed in the order of their heaviness: from killing as the heaviest to idle gossip as the lightest. Of the three nonvirtues of mind, heresy is the heaviest negative action. The stronger the negative intention, the more powerful the karma created, and hence the stronger the suffering that will be experienced. Although monetary value is not that important an aspect, the more valuable the possession we steal, the more it hurts the owner, and the heavier the karma we create. The heaviness of the karma also depends on the power of the object. Some beings are more powerful for us, such as our parents, bodhisattvas, buddhas and, of course, our guru.

When we create the result similar to the cause we are habituating our mind to repeating the action and therefore the result becomes heavier, even though the nonvirtuous action itself might not seem that heavy. Gossiping is a perfect example of this. And we have already seen that because karma expands, if we fail to purify a negative action the suffering we will experience from it when the imprint ripens will get heavier

OSHO

Celebration is possible if each moment brings you something new. If each moment brings you something from the unknown, if each moment is a penetration of the unknown into the known, then life is an excitement without expectation. Then life is a constant movement into the unknown. Nothing can frustrate you because in the first place you never expected that anything was going to be the same for ever.

Why is there so much frustration in the world? because everybody is expecting permanence. And permanence is not the nature of things. Nothing can be done about it. You have to grow and drop the idea of permanence.

OSHO

The man who has gone beyond mind and the man who has fallen below mind - both are out of the mind, so there is some similarity. That similarity should not deceive anybody - because the person who has fallen below mind, will be sad, tense, searching for the lost home, nervous, feeling unworthy. You have to look into the qualities and the feelings of the man.

The man who has gone beyond the mind will be feeling like a child, innocent, will be relishing existence and its beauty, will be creative. He cannot be de structive. He may paint, he may sculpt, he may sing, he may dance, but a man who is moving above mind is bound to pour a little more beauty into the world, a little more music, a little more poetry - that is his contribution.

Life is precious indeed, yet no matter how precious it may be, if we try to grasp it, it will slip out of our grasp like water. Therefore, with the support of the Buddha Dharma, may we learn to enjoy life by swimming in this infinite stream – not necessarily by swimming faster or slower, but by letting the water of life float and carry us, so that we can let go of control over life.

HH the great 14th Dalai Lama

AFFLICTIVE EMOTIONS ARE BASED ON A MISTAKE

Impure states of mind such as desire and hatred are not part of the basic nature of the mind, and must be produced with the assistance of ignorance. All faulty states of mind are mistaken at their root. Ignorance is a form of consciousness mistaken with respect to the object of its attention; it is wrong about it. But valid consciousnesses the opposites of lust and hatred-operate even when there is no mistaken belief in independent existence.
Valid cognition supports love and compassion, for instance.
