Intelligence is k n o w n only w h e n you encounter the u n k n o w n , about w h i c h you don't have any memory, any knowledge, any information beforehand. W h e n you encounter the u n k n o w n , that is the point which is decisive. H o w do you respond? Intelligence means the capability to respond to n e w situations. It comes from your being—the m i n d is only a vehicle—a kind of awareness of what the m i n d is, without belonging to it. Intelligence is the quality of the witness; it watches the m i n d and it gives direction to the mind.
