I sought many kinds of wealth, but I found them all, in the end, to be a loss. Then I searched for the wealth within myself. What I found was godliness. Then I realized that losing godliness is truly a loss, and finding it is the only wealth. Somebody once praised an emperor with many words. He sang many beautiful songs to the emperor’s glory, expecting to receive something in return.
The emperor laughed at all the praises heaped on him, and then presented the man with a lot of gold coins. When he looked at the coins, the man’s eyes filled with an extraordinary shine and he looked up toward the sky. Something was written on those coins. He threw them away and started dancing; his state had changed dramatically. An amazing inner revolution had happened from reading what was on the coins.
After many years, somebody asked him what was written on the coins. He replied, “On the gold coins it said: ‘God is enough.’” Truly, God is enough. Those who know all agree with this truth. What did I see? I saw that people who have everything are poor; I saw very wealthy people who actually have nothing. Then I stumbled upon this key – that those who want to attain everything have to let go of everything. Those who dare to let go of everything become worthy of godliness.
