THE DRAWBACKS OF DELUSIONS (299)
From An Ornament to the SÒtras: Delusions destroy you, destroy sentient beings, and destroy ethics. Lesser people disparage you; you lose guardians and gain your teacher’s reproach. You gain disputes and infamy, and then rebirth to unconducive states. You lose both what you possess and have yet to acquire, and you gain great suffering. In other words, delusions have many drawbacks. When you develop a delusion, your mindstream becomes a nonvirtuous entity; you then act perversely toward the objects [of the delusions]; this makes the latent seeds of the delusion take hold; so you will continually develop the same sort of delusions—that is, attachment, hostility, or whatever—and enter those forbidden states deprecated by the saints. Your unfortunate karmic actions will increase because of these last two drawbacks. You stray away from both liberation and omniscience, becoming distanced from them. Delusion causes your virtuous actions to decline, and so on; so it makes you wrong yourself and others. It makes your ethics decline; you will be given fewer gifts and be paid less service. Even the buddhas and Dharma protectors will criticize you. Other beings as well as you will suffer because your delusion may make other people want to kill you, and so on. In this life you develop a worse reputation because of becoming embroiled in lawsuits, arguments, and so on. And in future lives you will be reborn in remote lands, or in the lower realms. To summarize, there are an infinite number of drawbacks, and they are all said to be produced by delusions. So when you develop these delusions, you must immediately recognize them clearly as your enemies and employ some means of putting a stop to them.
