Venerable Kalu Rinpoche

If one does not recognize the mind's true nature, one continues to be completely bewildered by emotional conflict and discursive thought. This can be an endless situation. When I first came to the West in the early seventies, I stopped in Geneva where I met an exotic sheik who had thirty wives; I have since heard that he now has even more. This person obviously has to deal with many conflicting emotions in such a broad-based form of relationship. In recognizing that all this emotional conflict is arising from the mind, one realizes the mind itself is insubstantial and empty. If the force of emotional conflict is removed by one's attaining this recognition, the individual can live peacefully, no matter how many wives or husbands one has.

the fourteenth Shamarpa

Just like a good meditation teacher, someone who wants to be a good meditator must also renounce attachment to worldly life. A meditator should live simply, without too many responsibilities, and without ambition. In order to focus, you must be willing to renounce.

THE DRAWBACKS OF DELUSIONS (299)
From An Ornament to the SÒtras: Delusions destroy you, destroy sentient beings, and destroy ethics. Lesser people disparage you; you lose guardians and gain your teacher’s reproach. You gain disputes and infamy, and then rebirth to unconducive states. You lose both what you possess and have yet to acquire, and you gain great suffering. In other words, delusions have many drawbacks. When you develop a delusion, your mindstream becomes a nonvirtuous entity; you then act perversely toward the objects [of the delusions]; this makes the latent seeds of the delusion take hold; so you will continually develop the same sort of delusions—that is, attachment, hostility, or whatever—and enter those forbidden states deprecated by the saints. Your unfortunate karmic actions will increase because of these last two drawbacks. You stray away from both liberation and omniscience, becoming distanced from them. Delusion causes your virtuous actions to decline, and so on; so it makes you wrong yourself and others. It makes your ethics decline; you will be given fewer gifts and be paid less service. Even the buddhas and Dharma protectors will criticize you. Other beings as well as you will suffer because your delusion may make other people want to kill you, and so on. In this life you develop a worse reputation because of becoming embroiled in lawsuits, arguments, and so on. And in future lives you will be reborn in remote lands, or in the lower realms. To summarize, there are an infinite number of drawbacks, and they are all said to be produced by delusions. So when you develop these delusions, you must immediately recognize them clearly as your enemies and employ some means of putting a stop to them.

THE AFFLICTIONS
Much of Buddhist literature is devoted to exposing the nature of afflictions and the need to overcome them. In Sanskrit, the word for affliction is klesha, and the Tibetan equivalent is nyon mong (literally, “that which afflicts from within”). An affliction, by its very nature, brings about an immediate disturbance within the mind of the individual the moment it arises and thereby causes suffering within that individual.

Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche

Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche suddenly passed away on April 26, 1992 in a car accident in India. His passing is looked upon as a profound method for benefiting sentient beings by removing obstacles for Buddhism, people in general, and for the Karma Kagyu tradition. Nevertheless, for his many disciples who knew him well, it causes in us the deepest sorrow.

H.H. Gyangkhang Rinpoche

Everything in the world is fickle and impermanent, so indulgence in the pursuit of material desires will bring only physical and mental pressures and pains. Nevertheless, we don’t realize that it is our heart that determines our suffering and happiness. We mistakenly thought that happiness comes when we possess outward things. Therefore, in order to live a free and happy life, we need to learn to make an adjustment to our inner world.

FREEDOM’S INNER CONDITIONS

Freedom does not start from the outside. Although external conditions have a part to play, that is not where freedom originates. This might sound backward, but authentic freedom arises initially from inner conditions. Its deepest roots are within us. Most often when we speak of freedom, what we actually have in mind are freedom’s outer manifestations. This may be the gravest error we make in our understanding of freedom. If we think we will achieve freedom when we can exercise complete control over our immediate environment, we overlook the single most important determinant of authentic freedom: our own minds.

The Third Trijang Rinpoche, Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso

Shartsé and Jangtsé colleges held a debate contest session for two days where most of the debates were on the Abhidharma. Since many years had passed since I took the examination, I could no longer remember enumerations in the Abhidharma. As stated in Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life (5.25):

Whatever has been learned, contemplated, and meditated upon by one who lacks awareness, like water in a leaky pot, will not be held by the memory.

As most of the topics had been stolen by the thief of forgetfulness, I was not able to judge the quality of the debaters’ erudition. I gave gifts to young novices of the two colleges who had memorized either the Ornament of Realization or Entering the Middle Way or both and advised them of the importance of putting effort into their studies. On the fifteenth, I gave prenovice and novice ordinations to fifty young monks of Shartsé and Jangtsé including Phara Tulku. On the morning of the eighth, I left Mundgod by car for Belgaum, from where I flew to Delhi. There I stayed at Lama Guru Deva’s house.

OSHO

Nature cures itself. In fact, nature cures. One has to give time; patience is needed. The English word for an ill person, patient, is beautiful. It means patience is needed; one has to wait. In fact, the function of the doctor is to help the patient to be patient. By giving medicine he is consoled. He thinks: "Now something is being done and soon I will be cured." He is helped in waiting. The doctor cannot do anything else. That's why so many "pathies" work - homeopa thy, allopathy, ayurveda - thousands of pathies work; even naturopathy works.

Sogyal Rinpoche

NO ONE CAN DIE FEARLESSLY and in complete security until they have truly realized the nature of mind. For only this realization, deepened over years of sustained practice, can keep the mind stable during the molten chaos of the process of death. Of all the ways I know of helping people to realize the nature of mind, that of the practice of Dzogchen, the most ancient and direct stream of wisdom within the teachings of Buddhism, and the source of the bardo teachings themselves, is the clearest, most effective, and most relevant to the environment and needs of today.

Don't follow after the object of hatred, look at the angry mind. Anger liberated by itself as it arises is mirrorlike wisdom.

Don't chase after the object of pride, look at the grasping mind. Self-importance liberated as it arises is the wisdom of equanimity.

Don't hanker after the object of desire, look at the craving mind.

MAHA GURU PADMASMABHAVA

Artwork based on statue of Mahaguru Padmasmabhava in Dharmshala

FOUR DHARMAS
 Master Padma said:
You must make sure your Dharma practice becomes the real Dharma. You must make sure your Dharma becomes the real path. You must make sure your path can clarify confusion. You must make sure your confusion dawns as wisdom. The lady asked: What does that mean? The master said: When you have understanding free from accepting and rejecting after knowing how to condense all the teachings into a single vehicle, then your Dharma practice becomes the real Dharma. When the three vipashyana states of bliss, clarity, and nonthought dawn, they are Dharmakaya itself. In any case, there are many people who fix their minds on an inert state of shamatha. Through that they will be reborn either in the dhyana realms of the gods or, even if they do not incarnate, they will still be unable to benefit beings.
