His Holiness The 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje

The Karmapa reminded those gathered that because everything is impermanent, we have the opportunity to change in every second, every minute, and every hour.

“If things weren’t impermanent then the old situation would just continue and there would be no chance for change. But because things are impermanent we are able to improve. Impermanence gives us room for hope.”

His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche

We should constantly keep in mind that Guru Rinpoche is our sole refuge, whether in happiness or in sorrow, whether in the higher realms of samsara or the lower. Without any second thoughts, we should give our whole mind to him, like throwing a pebble into a lake.

The era in which we now live is known as the "Age of Five Degenerations." Our lifespan is shorter than it was in the Golden Age; this is the degeneration of life. Also, it is very rare to find someone who practices the Dharma and whose behavior really accords with it; this is the degeneration of karma, or activity. This world of ours is constantly stricken by wars, famine, and disease, and there is but little hope of peace and happiness; this is the degeneration of the times. All the while, the root causes of this general degeneration are the intense emotions that plague beings: hatred, desire, misjudgment, pride, and envy; this is the degeneration linked with emotions. Finally, beings even turn their back on the Dharma; this is the degeneration of the view.

Ignorance
54.
Don’t just take for granted ideas forged by ignorance; look at the nature of ignorance itself. The hosts of thoughts, liberated by themselves as they arise, are awareness-void; This awareness-void is none other than the wisdom of the absolute expanse. In the self-liberation of ignorance, recite the six-syllable mantra

Ignorance here means ignorance of our own Buddha-nature. In this respect, we are as ignorant as a beggar with a precious jewel in his hand who, not recognizing how valuable it is, simply throws it away. It is because of ignorance that we are the slaves of our thoughts and cannot tell right from wrong. It is because of ignorance that we are blind to the law of cause and effect and refuse to believe that every action has a result. It is because of ignorance that we cannot accept the existence of past and future lives. It is because of ignorance that we have no confidence in the beneficial results of praying to the Three Jewels. It is because of ignorance that we do not recognize the truth of the Dharma. Ignorance is at the very root of the eighty-four thousand negative emotions, for as long as we fail to see that the true nature of everything is voidness, we insist on believing that things really exist; and this is the source of all deluded perceptions and all negative thoughts. However, ignorance is not everlasting like the permanent darkness of a cavern deep underground. Like any other phenomenon, it can only have arisen from voidness and therefore can have no true existence. Once you recognize the void nature of ignorance, it turns into the wisdom of the absolute expanse. This is the wisdom mind of Chenrezi, the Buddha-nature, the essence of the Tathāgatas, which is present in all beings. Only because of ignorance, as the Buddha demonstrated, do we believe our deluded perception instead of recognizing this, our own nature. By establishing its void nature, recognize the dullness and delusion of ignorance as the absolute expanse itself. Then rest in that experience and practice the view, meditation, and action. This is the very heart essence of Chenrezi.

The Karmapa. Ogyen Triney Dorje

From one perspective, my situation is unique. From another, it is not unique at all. I was given the grand title of Karmapa and informed from an early age that I had a responsibility  to feel concern for everyone I came into contact with, and to benefit the whole world. There is nothing unique about having this responsibility; what is unique is that I was made aware of having it. We all share the same responsibility to care for others and be of benefit to the world. My title simply draws my attention to that fact clearly and means I had people reminding me of my responsibilities and encouraging me to develop the ability to fulfill them.

Budai

According to Chinese tradition, ‘Budai’ was an eccentric Chinese Zen monk who lived during the later Liang dynasty (907-923 AD) of China. He was a native of Fenghua and his Buddhist name was Qieci (Chinese : Pinyin). He was considered a man of good and loving character. Some Buddhist traditions consider him a Buddha or ‘Bodhisattva’, usually Maitreya (the future Buddha). His large protruding stomach and jolly smile have given him the common designation “Laughing Buddha”.

... The Sixteenth Karmapa ...

“Although the 16th Karmapa appeared
and acted as a human being,
his mind was completely open,
without any limitation.
He knew everything in an instant
and without having to think about it.”

The simple presence of Karmapa would create a profound and lasting blessing on all people coming into contact with him. He himself said that a Buddha should be known by his laugh and it was said that when Karmapa laughed, which he did all the time, one would hear him several houses away.

He also demonstrated a complete ability to communicate with animals. Once, at a course in Europe, a large raven tapped on the window where Karmapa was teaching. When let in, the bird flew directly to Karmapa, after which he instructed two people to go to a barn a few miles down the road where two other birds were trapped and starving. The birds were discovered and rescued."

64.

 One deity, Chenrezi, embodies all Buddhas; One mantra, the six syllables, embodies all mantras;
One Dharma, bodhichitta, embodies all practices of the development and completion stages. Knowing the one which liberates all, recite the sixsyllable mantra.

The Buddha Shākyamuni himself is an emanation of Chenrezi; the Dharma, which shows us what to avoid and what to cultivate, is perfectly contained in the six-syllable mantra; the Saṅgha, the Bodhisattvas who help us along the path, are emanations of Chenrezi as well. Chenrezi is thus the union of the Three Jewels. Just as one reservoir collects countless drops of rain,
Chenrezi’s compassion includes all the wisdom of Mañjushrī and all the power of Vajrapāṇi. With this one deity, one mantra, and one practice, you can accomplish everything. The many deities are infinitely diverse: peaceful or wrathful, with one, three, or many heads, and with two, four, six, or many more arms, each one symbolizing a different quality. Yet you can be confident that all of them are included in Chenrezi. In the same way, since all the beneficial power of the immense variety of other mantras is contained in the sixsyllable mantra by itself, you can put all your heart into reciting just the one mantra.

The fact that you have the intention to work for others is important. Act on your wholesome intentions and altruistic impulses. If you have the thought of benefiting society, that is significant. Nurture and treasure that thought, and act on it as best you can. Doing so will certainly change you, and that in itself can be the start of the change you want to see in your world.

Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso Rinpoche

teaching by Khenchen Tsewang Gyatso Rinpoche published in Palyul Clear Light

Afflictive emotions don't arise anywhere but within yourself. The important practice is to not look outside at the external condition. The moment anything becomes a condition for your afflictive emotions you have to look into your mind. Mostly our five senses are faced outward. We think, "This person said this certain word and it affected me and THAT is why I'm angry." Our minds always try to blame.

So it is important to look into your own mind. To watch your thoughts is the key point for your practice. If you really want Dharma, this is key. But if you want to just have fun with Dharma then you don't necessarily have to worry about it, you can just be angry. It's fine unless you are really thinking, "How can I do real Dharma practice?" Then truly you must work with your mind.

His Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche

In one of his past rebirths, the Buddha was a giant ocean turtle. One day, while he was far from any land, he saw that a ship carrying some merchants had been wrecked and was sinking. The merchants were about to drown, but the turtle rescued them by carrying them the long way to the nearest shore on his back. After carrying them to safety, he was so exhausted that he fell asleep on the beach. But while he slept, eighty thousand flies began to eat their way into his body. The turtle awoke in great pain, and realized what had happened. He saw that there was no way to be rid of all the flies; if he plunged into the sea, all of them would die. So, being a Bodhisattva, he stayed where he was and let the flies eat away his body.

Filled with love, he made the prayer, "Whenever I attain enlightenment may I, in turn, consume all these insects' negative emotions and actions, and their belief in true existence, and thus lead them to Buddhahood." As a result of this prayer, when the Buddha turned the wheel of Dharma for the first time in Varanasi the former flies had been reborn as the assembly of eighty thousand fortunate celestial beings who were present.

Had the turtle killed the insects in anger by diving into the sea, however, there would have been no end to his sufferings. The result of killing a single being out of anger is to be reborn in the hell realms for the duration of five hundred human lives, or a great kalpa.

SEVEN CORRUPTIONS

Master Padma said: When practicing the Dharma there are seven types of corruption

. The lady asked: What are they? The master said: if your faith is small while your intelligence is great, you become corrupted by considering yourself a teacher.

If you have many listeners while your self-regard is high, you become corrupted by considering yourself a spiritual friend.

If you assume superior qualities while not having taken the Dharma to heart, you become corrupted by considering yourself a leader.

If you give oral instructions while not practicing them yourself, you become corrupted by being an insensitive "Dharma expert."

If you are fond of senseless babble while lacking the Dharma in your heart, you become corrupted by being a craving charlatan yogi.

If you have little learning while lacking the oral instructions, you become corrupted by being a commoner though your faith may be great.

A genuine practitioner who acts in accordance with the true teachings should liberate his being with intelligence, tame his mind with faith, cut misconceptions with listening to teachings, cast away social concerns, mingle his mind with the Dharma, perfect his knowledge with learning and reflecting, resolve his mind with the oral instructions, and gain final certainty through the view and meditation. That, however, is difficult.

Mahaguru Padmasambhava

Lady Tsogyal asked the master: How many ways are there to safeguard awakened mind?

The master replied:

There are three ways to safeguard it. Safeguard it as you would a wild horse, which should be tamed undistractedly; similarly, the yogi should remain undistracted from the nature of the view. Safeguard it as you would a treasure of precious gems, which, unless you make efforts to protect it, is vulnerable to bandits and thieves. Similarly, the yogi should remain invulnerable nerable to dullness and agitation, lest he allow his samadhi to stray. Safeguard it as a king would his queen, so that people are unable to hurt the queen, as they are all included among her subjects. Similarly, the yogi should remain so that thoughts can cause no harm since he or she has realized all phenomena to be mind.

Mahaguru Padmasambhava

Lady Tsogyal asked the LotusBorn master: What is the dividing line between pain and pleasure?

The master replied: Pain is uneasiness of mind, while pleasure is mental ease. When applying this experientially to
your stream-of-being, look into the painful state of uneasiness and see that it does not consist of any concrete substance but rather is mind. Mind is empty, and this empty quality is a state of ease—this is the vital point of changing pain to ease. Tsogyal, this advice of utmost importance, I give to you.

OSHO

Happiness is always there, but if you seek it you will find unhappiness, because by seeking you will miss happiness. That's what unhappiness is: missing happiness. So with pursuit, unhappiness has a certain relationship, a partnership. If you pursue you will find unhappiness. And the American constitution has given the idea to the whole American people: Pursue.

And they are pursuing desperately - in money, in power, in religion - and they are running all over the world looking for somebody to teach them how to find happiness. And the real thing is to just come back home; forget all about it. Do something else which has nothing to do with happiness.

Shivapuri Baba was undoubtedly one of the rarest flowerings, especially in India, where so many fools claim to be mahatmas. Finding a guy like Shivapuri Baba in India takes either a lot of luck or a lot of investigation. In India, there are 500,000 mahatmas, according to official figures. It’s almost hard to spot a genuine guy amid this throng.

OSHO

EITHER/OR

Mind functions in an either/or way: either this can be right or its opposite can be right. Both together cannot be right – as far as mind, its logic, its rationality, is concerned.  If mind is either/or, then the heart is both/and. The heart has no logic, but a sensitivity, a perceptivity. It can see that not only can both be together; in fact, they are not two.

It is just one phenomenon, seen from two different aspects. And there is much more than the two – that’s why I say “both/and.”  And the heart is always right. If there is a question of choosing between the mind and the heart... because mind is a creation of the society. It has been educated.ucated. It has been given to you by the society, not by existence. The heart is unpolluted. It is pure existence; hence, it has a sensitivity.  Look from the viewpoint of the heart, and the contradiction starts melting like ice.

OSHO

Loneliness is a misunderstood aloneness. Once you misunderstand your aloneness as loneliness, the whole context changes. Aloneness has a beauty and grandeur, a positivity; loneliness is poor, negative, dark, dismal. Loneliness is a gap. Something is missing, something is needed to fill it, and nothing can ever fill it because it is a misunderstanding in the first place. As you grow older, the gap also grows bigger.

People are so afraid to be by themselves that they do any kind of stupid thing. I have seen people playing cards alone; the other party is not there. They have invented games in which the same person plays cards from both sides. Those who have known aloneness say something absolutely different. They say there is nothing more beautiful, more peaceful, more joyful than being alone.

OSHO

If you want to be an authentic individual, use sadness; don’t escape from it. It is a great blessing. Sit silently with it, rejoice in it. There is nothing wrong in being sad. And the more you become acquainted with it and its subtle nuances, you will be surprised—it is a great relaxation, a great rest, and you come out of it rejuvenated, refreshed, younger, livelier. And once you have tasted it, you will seek those beautiful moments of sadness again and again. You will wait for them, you will welcome them, and they will open new doors of your aloneness . . .

Alone you are born, alone you will die. Between these two alonenesses you can deceive yourself that you are not alone, that you have a wife, a husband, children, money, power. But between these two alonenesses you are alone. Everything is just to keep yourself engaged in something or other, so that you don’t become aware of it.
