Everything in the world is fickle and impermanent, so indulgence in the pursuit of material desires will bring only physical and mental pressures and pains. Nevertheless, we don’t realize that it is our heart that determines our suffering and happiness. We mistakenly thought that happiness comes when we possess outward things. Therefore, in order to live a free and happy life, we need to learn to make an adjustment to our inner world.

FREEDOM’S INNER CONDITIONS

Freedom does not start from the outside. Although external conditions have a part to play, that is not where freedom originates. This might sound backward, but authentic freedom arises initially from inner conditions. Its deepest roots are within us. Most often when we speak of freedom, what we actually have in mind are freedom’s outer manifestations. This may be the gravest error we make in our understanding of freedom. If we think we will achieve freedom when we can exercise complete control over our immediate environment, we overlook the single most important determinant of authentic freedom: our own minds.

The Third Trijang Rinpoche, Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso

Shartsé and Jangtsé colleges held a debate contest session for two days where most of the debates were on the Abhidharma. Since many years had passed since I took the examination, I could no longer remember enumerations in the Abhidharma. As stated in Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life (5.25):

Whatever has been learned, contemplated, and meditated upon by one who lacks awareness, like water in a leaky pot, will not be held by the memory.

As most of the topics had been stolen by the thief of forgetfulness, I was not able to judge the quality of the debaters’ erudition. I gave gifts to young novices of the two colleges who had memorized either the Ornament of Realization or Entering the Middle Way or both and advised them of the importance of putting effort into their studies. On the fifteenth, I gave prenovice and novice ordinations to fifty young monks of Shartsé and Jangtsé including Phara Tulku. On the morning of the eighth, I left Mundgod by car for Belgaum, from where I flew to Delhi. There I stayed at Lama Guru Deva’s house.

OSHO

Nature cures itself. In fact, nature cures. One has to give time; patience is needed. The English word for an ill person, patient, is beautiful. It means patience is needed; one has to wait. In fact, the function of the doctor is to help the patient to be patient. By giving medicine he is consoled. He thinks: "Now something is being done and soon I will be cured." He is helped in waiting. The doctor cannot do anything else. That's why so many "pathies" work - homeopa thy, allopathy, ayurveda - thousands of pathies work; even naturopathy works.

NO ONE CAN DIE FEARLESSLY and in complete security until they have truly realized the nature of mind. For only this realization, deepened over years of sustained practice, can keep the mind stable during the molten chaos of the process of death. Of all the ways I know of helping people to realize the nature of mind, that of the practice of Dzogchen, the most ancient and direct stream of wisdom within the teachings of Buddhism, and the source of the bardo teachings themselves, is the clearest, most effective, and most relevant to the environment and needs of today.

Don't chase after the object of pride, look at the grasping mind. Self-importance liberated as it arises is the wisdom of equanimity.

Don't hanker after the object of desire, look at the craving mind.

FOUR DHARMAS
 Master Padma said:
You must make sure your Dharma practice becomes the real Dharma. You must make sure your Dharma becomes the real path. You must make sure your path can clarify confusion. You must make sure your confusion dawns as wisdom. The lady asked: What does that mean? The master said: When you have understanding free from accepting and rejecting after knowing how to condense all the teachings into a single vehicle, then your Dharma practice becomes the real Dharma. When the three vipashyana states of bliss, clarity, and nonthought dawn, they are Dharmakaya itself. In any case, there are many people who fix their minds on an inert state of shamatha. Through that they will be reborn either in the dhyana realms of the gods or, even if they do not incarnate, they will still be unable to benefit beings.

Drikung Chetsang Rinpoché

If there is no inherent existence, what use is compassion?

When we speak of a lack of inherent existence, we must understand it as a universal characteristic of all phenomena. If you focus on just that and realize the non-inherent existence of all phenomena but do not have any other aspect to your practice, this will block your progress. You come up against a wall, and can’t progress farther. If you really perfect this, if you really see the ultimate nature of things in their lack of inherent existence, then you are no longer bound to anything in samsara, and you attain nirvana. But that functions as a sort of stopping point, a blank wall. You can’t go any farther; you can’t achieve the benefits of living beings. You can’t even achieve your own ultimate benefit. You’re stuck! You have to go back and develop compassion in order to achieve Buddhahood because compassion cuts the other extreme view, clinging to the concept of non-inherent existence, or nihilism. Wisdom and compassion are developed
separately and joined together in the practice so as to obtain Buddhahood. It happens only through joining these together. So it’s important not to emphasize the absence of inherent existence too much. One has to always develop compassion and join those two together. Then there is no problem in attaining Buddhahood.

The Benefits of Reciting the Six-Syllable Mantra
Om Mani padme hum
by Drubwang Konchok Norbu Rinpoche
Everyone has assembled here in order to recite the six-syllable mantra. It is indeed the best way to make our human lives meaningful. In this world, the six-syllable mantra is the most suitable practice for ordinary people like ourselves. Lord Buddha has taught many different kinds of Dharma teachings, and if all those teachings are summarised in a nutshell, it is the six-syllable mantra. There can be no Dharma practice more profound than this mantra. Reciting the six-syllable mantra is extremely beneficial and necessary at this point of time. We have taken countless births in samsara, and every time we are born in samsara, we committed lots of negative karma and we have had many transgressions of precepts and vows. All these downfalls, transgressions and defilements can be purified through the recitation of this mantra.

Not only do we have this precious human life, we also possess the Buddha-nature, which is the potentiality or the seed for attaining complete enlightenment. Generally speaking, all sentient beings are Buddhas. The only difference between a Buddha and a sentient being is that the Buddha is free from all defilements while the sentient being is not. The moment the defilements are removed from the Buddha-nature of a sentient being, the sentient being becomes a Buddha. It is important to know that all these defilements which have covered our mind are temporary. They can be removed and eliminated through skillful methods such as by reciting the six-syllable mantra. All these defilements that have covered our Buddha-nature have been accumulated from countless lives in samsara. And all these defilements fall into two categories – the defilement of afflictive emotions and the defilement that obstructs one from realising the absolute reality. Both these defilements can be purified and eliminated from its roots through the recitation of the six-syllable mantra.

The Eighth Garchen Rinpoche མགར་ཆེན་རིན་པོ་ཆེ་

Gar Quote No. 32  A person who has seen the nature of mind as it is and has gained stability in abiding in it, as they watch their mind they see the empty essence like space, unidentifiable. The nature of mind cannot be described; it is like space. Milarepa said, "When there is no difference between space and mind, that is the perfected dharmakaya." The empty space-like essence is the quality of dharmakaya. Then, there is a vivid clear awareness that knows its empty space-like essence. The nature of clarity is emptiness; the nature of emptiness is clarity. They are not separate, they are non-distinct, they are the union of clarity and emptiness.  The qualities of the samboghakaya arise from the nature, which is clear awareness. From the union of clarity and emptiness shines the natural radiance of compassion pervading all the reaches of space. It pervades wherever emptiness pervades. We thus say that the buddhas' compassion pervades everywhere. The all-pervasive compassion is the nirmanakaya.

Chatral Sangye Dorje Rinpoche

Question: Many Tibetans quote a sutra passage that says if one does not hear, see, or suspect that meat has been obtained especially for you, then it is acceptable to eat. How do you respond to this?

Rinpoche: If the animal being killed is unseen, then it is something like stealing something without being caught. That would also be deemed acceptable if you used this rationale. You could say something dirty without being heard — as if you need evidence to judge whether it is a sin or not. What they say is not right. Killing, stealing, and other negative actions can never be gotten away with. Even if other people don’t see you do them, the deities, buddhas, and bodhisattvas see you doing these things. There is a Tibetan saying that even if one does not get caught committing a sin, that the gods catch you every time. It is impossible to do anything without being seen — you’re always being watched by the deities. They see and understand what you did — they know that you helped to kill an animal by buying meat. This is my answer.

Book Compassionate Action
Edited, Introduced, and Annotated by Zach Larson Snow Lion Publications Ithaca, New York Boulder, Colorado

To obtain real peace and happiness in this world one has simply to follow the path of ahimsa - nonviolence - which naturally is common to all the religions of the world. If we do not like to experience any pain or suffering of any kind, how can we expect any other creature - whether big or small - to feel otherwise?

There is no better prayer or worship we can offer to Lord Buddha than being thoughtful, kind, compassionate and abstaining from taking the life of any fellow human being, animal, bird, fish or insect.
