His Holiness Karmapa

In The Way of the Bodhisattva, Shantideva writes that at the time of death we have to bear the consequences of our karma. We cannot share the consequences of our actions with friends or relatives. Our own happiness depends upon ourselves, but we make the serious mistake of forgetting that the negative karma created by our own misdeeds will ripen upon us. Lifetime after lifetime, our karma has thrust us into the prison of samsara.

Khandro Tsering Chödrön

Khandro Tsering Chödrön's name literally means "Dakini Lamp of the Teachings and Long Life." The wife of Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö, an eminent master of the twentieth century, she was universally regarded as one of the supremely realized female Buddhist practitioners of our time. The great sage Padmasambhava said:

“The vision of this life is like last night’s dream. All meaningless actions are like ripples on a lake.”

 The dream you had last night was so short; from beginning to end, it was over so quickly. In a dream you might feel as if you have been on a long journey or spent many years doing something, but actually, a dream is just a few minutes in duration. Whatever good things happen in a dream are also over quickly. This is one reason why Padmasambhava likens life to a dream—they both finish so quickly. Life is over so soon, like a dream.
